Women’s Empowerment in Islam: Rights, Responsibilities and Contemporary Perspectives

Abstract

Women’s empowerment is an important social, intellectual, economic, political, and educational issue in the contemporary world. Islam presented a comprehensive framework for the dignity, rights, responsibilities, and empowerment of women more than fourteen centuries ago. At a time when women in many societies had limited legal, economic, educational, and social rights, Islam recognized women as morally responsible and legally competent individuals and granted them rights to education, property, inheritance, marriage, financial independence, social participation, and protection from injustice. The Qur’an emphasizes the spiritual and moral equality of men and women and establishes that both are responsible for fulfilling religious and social obligations. The Prophetic tradition further demonstrates the active participation of women in education, commerce, community affairs, consultation, and public welfare. This article examines the concept of women’s empowerment from an Islamic perspective and explores its foundations in the Qur’an and Sun nah. It discusses women’s spiritual dignity, right to education, economic independence, property and inheritance rights, matrimonial rights, political and social participation, and protection from violence and injustice. The article also highlights the examples of prominent Muslim women such as Khalid bint Waylaid, Alisha bint Abe Baker, Fāṭimah AL-Zahrāʾ, Asmara bint Abe Baker, and other female Companions who contributed significantly to Islamic society. Furthermore, it distinguishes between Islamic teachings and cultural practices that sometimes restrict women in the name of religion. The study argues that genuine empowerment in Islam is based on dignity, justice, knowledge, responsibility, economic security, and moral agency rather than on competition between the sexes. Islamic principles provide a balanced framework in which women can participate actively in family, educational, economic, and social life while maintaining ethical and spiritual values. The article concludes that applying the authentic principles of Islam can contribute significantly to the empowerment and development of women in contemporary Muslim societies.
