Abstract

This research article presents an analytical study of the allusions used in Saraiki classical poetry. Allusion is an important literary device in rhetoric through which a poet briefly refers to well-known religious, Qur’anic, historical, legendary, literary, and folkloric events, personalities, and traditions, thereby expanding the semantic, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions of poetry. In Saraiki classical poetry, the use of allusions is not merely limited to enhancing the beauty and effectiveness of poetic expression; rather, it also serves as a means of expressing Sufi thought, divine love, spiritual knowledge, purification of the self, patience, trust in God, sacrifice, devotion, truthfulness, and moral values. This study analyzes selected allusions found in the poetry of Baba Farid, Ali Haider Multani, Chiragh Awan, Sultan Bahu, Maulvi Lutf Ali, Maulvi Abdul Hakim Uchavi, Sachal Sarmast, and Khwaja Ghulam Farid through selected poetic examples. Overall, the study concludes that the allusive tradition of Saraiki classical poetry is not only an effective means of enhancing literary and aesthetic beauty but also a comprehensive expression of Sufi thought, spiritual guidance, moral teachings, and cultural consciousness.
