A CRITICAL AND RESEARCH-BASED STUDY OF THE ZIKR-E-RASOOL IN RUMI’S MASNAVI

Abstract

The research work under review analyzes Dr. Khawaja Abdul Hameed Yazdani’s critical and scholarly study “Zikr-e-Rasool ﷺ … in the Masnavi of Rumi”. The book highlights the profound and widespread references to the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ found throughout Jalaluddin Rumi’s Masnavi. Dr. Yazdani presents these references in six chapters, corresponding to the six books (daftars) of the Masnavi, and explains them in simple and accessible Urdu. The author avoids complex philosophical discussions and instead focuses on making Rumi’s ideas understandable for common readers unfamiliar with Persian. The book examines prophetic praises, moral teachings, spiritual values, stories, parables, and Quranic or Hadith-based themes present in the Masnavi. It also includes discussions on the significance of love, mysticism, the purification of the soul, moral reformation, and Rumi’s method of conveying spiritual truths through symbolic narratives. The study also compares the thoughts of Rumi and Allama Iqbal, highlighting Iqbal’s profound spiritual connection with Rumi. Furthermore, Dr. Yazdani evaluates previous scholarship by major critics such as Badīʿ al-Zamān Furuzanfar and Dr. Abdul Latif. Overall, the book is an important contribution to Rumi studies, Prophetic biography (Seerat), Urdu criticism, and the understanding of Persian spiritual literature. Although some critics argue that its simplicity limits deeper academic inquiry, the book is widely appreciated for its clarity, fluency, and accessibility۔
