Abstract

Islam provides a comprehensive framework for individual and collective life, placing moral values at the heart of human civilization. Alongside the Holy Qur'an, the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ serves as the second primary source of Islamic guidance, offering practical principles for cultivating ethical conduct and establishing a stable society. Among the classical scholars who made remarkable contributions to the preservation and transmission of these teachings is Imam Ibn Abī Shaybah (d. 235 AH), whose Kitāb al-Adab is one of the earliest and most comprehensive compilations devoted to Islamic ethics, social conduct, and moral refinement. This study, entitled "Moral Teachings and Social Stability in Kitāb al-Adab of Ibn Abī Shaybah: An Analytical Study," examines the ethical principles presented in Kitāb al-Adab and analyzes their role in promoting individual character development and sustainable social stability. The research investigates Imam Ibn Abī Shaybah's methodology in compiling traditions related to morality and explores how the Prophetic traditions, together with the sayings of the Companions and Successors, establish a coherent ethical framework for strengthening family relations, protecting human dignity, promoting justice, honesty, trustworthiness, forgiveness, compassion, good neighbourliness, social responsibility, and peaceful coexistence. Employing an analytical and descriptive methodology, the study argues that Kitāb al-Adab views moral excellence not merely as a personal virtue but as the foundation of a prosperous and harmonious society. It demonstrates that social cohesion, mutual trust, and lasting peace are primarily achieved through ethical refinement rather than legal enforcement alone. The research further highlights that many contemporary challenges—including family disintegration, moral decline, intolerance, materialism, social fragmentation, and erosion of trust—can be effectively addressed through the moral teachings contained in this classical work. The study concludes that Kitāb al-Adab represents a timeless source of Islamic ethical philosophy whose teachings remain highly relevant for contemporary societies. By integrating these values into educational institutions, family upbringing, religious discourse, and public policy, Muslim societies can foster responsible citizenship, strengthen social solidarity, and promote sustainable peace. The research therefore emphasizes that moral reform is the indispensable prerequisite for social stability and that Imam Ibn Abī Shaybah's Kitāb al-Adab continues to provide practical guidance for addressing the ethical and social challenges of the modern world.
